WHAT KARATE MEANS TO ME
by Ronalda Melanson
September 1997

I came to Karate to learn some self-defence. Timid and unsure of myself, I began. It did not take long for me to feel comfortable in the dojo, never feeling intimidated by anyone. Everyone was very helpful. I discovered a new self-discipline and self-confidence. I find myself being more confident to try new things.

My first competition, the 11th Dominion Wado Kai Championship, was very nerve-wracking and scary. But I pulled together all of what I learned, took some deep breaths and received my first trophy in my life. "Wow! What a thrill!"

I am sure that I will continue to learn and enjoy my time at the dojo. I hope that the new karateka will feel the way I do and learn and enjoy themselves as much as I have.
